Background

The LCP Chemicals site is located on 813 acres immediately northwest of Brunswick, Georgia, and includes an area where several industrial facilities operated from the 1920s to 1994. Tidal marshland covers the majority of the site (more than 670 acres). The former manufacturing operations are located on about 133 acres of dry land between the marsh and Ross Road.

This site is on EPA’s National Priorities List, a list of hazardous waste sites also known as Superfund sites.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has been working with the Brunswick community to understand health effects related to chemical exposure at the site since the mid-1990s. The agency has conducted site visits and reports evaluating contaminants in local seafood, wild game, marsh, and soil.

In 2014, ATSDR released a public health assessment (PHA) which focused on contaminants in soil in the dry-land area of the site and concerns about developing this area.

ATSDR found that some areas of soil at the site contain harmful levels of mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), aromatic hydrocarbons, lead, and dioxins. Contaminants in these areas could harm people’s health if the site were developed for residential or industrial use.
