Summary | Using data from the New Jersey ALS Surveillance Project, this study sought to gather reliable and timely data to better describe the incidence, prevalence, and demographic characteristics of ALS within the state. Neurologists caring for ALS patients were recruited and asked to report all eligible patients who had been under the physician’s care for the years 2009-2011. This is the first study to implement a case ascertainment methodology using neurologists state-wide. The average crude annual incidence rate (1.87 per 100,000 person-years), the average age-adjusted annual incidence rate (1.67 per 100,000 person-years), and the point prevalence rate (4.40 per 100,000 persons) were reported. |
