On January 24-25, 2005, EGAPP Project staff hosted an invitational conference that brought together 21 experts in the areas of evidence-based medicine, health care, genomics, health technology assessment, epidemiology, ethics, and health economics from the United States, Canada, and the UK.  Participants also represented a variety of professional settings, including public health, academia, two US Task Forces, clinical and laboratory practice, industry, and regulation.  The participants considered existing and potential approaches and methodologies for systematic evaluation of genetic tests and other genomic applications and reviewed lessons learned by existing programs and projects conducting systematic reviews.

Initial discussion sessions were organized by the components of evaluation (analytical validity, clinical validity, clinical utility, and ethical, social, and legal implications).  Rather than making presentations, session moderators posed a series of questions that were discussed by the group. At the end of the first day, a moderator conducted an open discussion that focused on themes developed during the day. At the end of the second day, a moderator revisited issues and themes as organized by the process of evidence-based review. A more detailed report is currently in development.
