The likelihood of developing overt hemochromatosis is shown as a function of HFE genotype in this horizontal bar chart. C282Y homozygotes have the highest risk, with risk declining progressively for compound heterozygotes (C282Y/H63D), H63D homozygotes, and C282Y heterozgotes. H63D heterozygotes are assumed to have the same minimal degree of risk as persons without identifiable mutations; in this category, the risk reflects the small possibility of carrying mutations not currently identifiable. For all genotypes, the risk of disease increases or decreases according to the presence of modifying factors such as gender, alcohol use and iron intake.
