Welcome new CDC Country Director for South Africa – Dr. Amy Herman-Roloff

Country Director for South Africa - Dr. Amy Herman-Roloff

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Amy Herman-Roloff, PhD, MPH as the new CDC Country Director and Division of Global HIV and TB Program Director for South Africa.

Dr. Amy Herman-Roloff most recently served as the Associate Director for Data Integration and Analysis with CDC South Africa.  She has over 16 years of experience working in international public health – with a specialty in utilizing data for program development.

Dr. Herman-Roloff began her career with CDC in 2013 as the Associate Director for Science with CDC Zimbabwe.  During her tenure she oversaw the science portfolio and served as a Principal Investigator for several studies including the Zimbabwe Population-based HIV Impact Assessment and managed multiple prevention programs.  In 2015, she joined CDC South Africa, serving in the Office of the Director.

Before joining CDC, Dr. Herman-Roloff worked as a Regional Researcher with Population Services International (PSI) in East Africa.  In this role with PSI, she led the research portfolio and provided technical assistance to eight PSI country offices.  Before joining PSI, Dr. Herman-Roloff worked for the University of Illinois at Chicago in Kisumu, Kenya where she supported the development and implementation of the Government of Kenya’s national monitoring system for medical male circumcision and led related operational research studies.

Dr. Herman-Roloff has published results from numerous studies in the areas of HIV, medical male circumcision, maternal and child health, and policy reform. She earned a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an MPH in epidemiology from the University of Minnesota.  She graduated with a double-major BA in Physics and English from Bethel University in Minnesota.

Dr. Herman-Roloff and her husband, Kurt, have three daughters. She enjoys singing in a choir in her free time.
