Global Progress Against Measles Threatened

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious health complications in children. Immunity gaps grew in 2020, with the largest increase in unvaccinated children in 20 years. Disease surveillance to detect measles also deteriorated. To regain progress toward measles elimination targets, countries must restart and strengthen efforts to reach all children with two doses of measles vaccine, implement robust disease surveillance, and identify and close immunity gaps.

Risk of Measles Outbreaks Growing Worldwide

In 2020, there were fewer reported measles cases than previous years. However, measles elimination targets continued to backslide as immunity gaps grew and disease surveillance deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
