World Malaria Day

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. In 2020 an estimated 241 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide, including about 2,000 cases in the United States. That same year 627,000 people died, mostly children in sub-Saharan Africa. On World Malaria Day 2022, we recognize how CDC works together with partners and scientists to support malaria control and elimination.

World Malaria Day 2022: Country-to-country collaboration for antimalarial resistance monitoring

CDC and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) collaborate with African malaria researchers and national malaria control programs to monitor drug resistance in Africa. The PMI-supported Antimalarial Resistance Monitoring in Africa (PARMA) network allows malaria experts across Africa and the U.S. to work together to quickly identify emerging resistance and adapt treatment practices.
