CDC in Eswatini: A Story of Transformation
Just two decades ago, the Kingdom of Eswatini was on the brink of devastation – ravaged by the dual epidemics of HIV and TB. Then known as Swaziland, Eswatini had the highest HIV prevalence in the world and a TB death rate ranked among the highest in the world. But then the country, with the support of CDC, PEPFAR*, and other global partners, launched national, multi-sectoral responses to address both diseases head on. Today, thanks to these efforts, Eswatini has experienced a remarkable transformation – becoming one of the first countries to achieve HIV epidemic control and experiencing dramatic reductions in TB infections and deaths. Eswatini’s transformation is not only a model for other countries, but underscores how CDC and PEPFAR, in collaboration with country and global partners, are helping to change the course of these epidemics and saving lives.
