Since 2000, measles vaccinations have prevented an estimated 56 million deaths, yet in 2021 measles vaccination coverage rates plummeted to levels not seen since 2008 – leaving nearly 40 million children vulnerable in every region of the world. Latest data covering 2000–2021 show global progress toward measles elimination is threatened by major setbacks that started in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
