Surging to Stop Outbreaks around the Globe

  • CDC Global Rapid Response Team (GRRT) deployed for 7,529 person-days
  • Tracked 139 outbreaks of international importance out of more than 50,000 potential health threats scanned each year
  • Experts deployed to 19 countries to support 11 emergency responses
  • Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) investigated 272 global health threats

Responding to Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
  • Over 159 public health professionals deployed 250 times to respond to the world’s second largest Ebola outbreak**
  • Trained 246 disease detectives through FETP
  • Over 7,000 health workers trained on Ebola detection and response by FETP residents/graduates
  • Over 12,500 persons vaccinated against Ebola

Stopping Measles Outbreaks Where They Start
  • Tracked 29 global measles outbreaks through the Global Disease Detection Operations Center
  • Rapid responders mobilized for 127 person-days to respond to measles outbreaks around the world
  • Supported 14 countries to respond to and prevent measles outbreaks, contributing to over 26 million children being vaccinated globally

Eradicating Polio
  • By the end of 2019, 80% of the world (4 out of 6 WHO regions) had been declared wild poliovirus free
  • Global eradication of wild poliovirus type 3 declared on World Polio Day, October 24, 2019
  • Stopped 14 of 29 circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks active in 2019

Eliminating Parasitic Diseases and Malaria
  • Supported 570 million persons at risk of malaria through the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) with USAID, distributing 48 million insecticide-treated bed nets
  • Tested more than 7,200 samples for suspected parasitic diseases in the United States and globally
  • Addressed 6,100 inquiries on DPDx – CDC’s hotline for parasitic diseases and malaria
  • Provided 212 U.S. patients in 33 states and Puerto Rico with IV artesunate, an otherwise unavailable life-saving treatment for severe malaria
  • Sole provider of life-saving medications for 247 U.S. patients with other parasitic infections

Preventing Disease, Disability, and Death

by Ensuring Equitable Access to Lifesaving Vaccines

  • Provided technical and programmatic support to 43 countries to introduce new vaccines
  • By the end of 2019, 173 (89%) countries had introduced rubella vaccines

Ending TB and Controlling the HIV Epidemic
  • Provided life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART) for 10.5 million men, women, and children living with HIV in more than 40 countries
  • Identified an additional 1.6 million people living with HIV globally
  • Supported 1.45 million voluntary medical male circumcisions from Sept. 2018 to Oct. 2019
  • Provided ART to 483,000 women to prevent mother-to-child transmission
  • More than 1.5 million people on ART completed CDC/PEPFAR supported TB preventive treatment to reduce their chances of acquiring TB
  • Supported TB screening for 8.1 million people living with HIV
