Public Health Law and Legal Epidemiology

This Grand Rounds presentation will provide an overview of public health law and legal epidemiology—the scientific study of law as a factor in the cause, distribution, and prevention of disease and injury in a population.

Law is a tool that can be used to protect and promote the health of the public. Law has been critical in attaining public health goals including detecting and controlling the spread of communicable diseases, pursuing safer workplaces and housing, ensuring high childhood immunization rates, improving motor vehicle safety, and more.

Studying the interaction of law and public health allows public health professionals to use legal solutions to create positive health outcomes, as well as assess how law is used to disparately impact populations. Participants will be introduced to the Public Health Law Program and how public health law research can be applied in practice. Additionally, participants will learn how legal epidemiology can be used

  • in all public health research and programming
  • to identify laws that promote public health
  • to understand which laws improve or create disparities in health outcomes
