Preventing Teen Vaping, the Los Angeles Story

Join this month’s Preventive Medicine Grand Rounds to learn why teen vaping is a public health crisis and what Los Angeles has done in response.

In November 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released federal data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) on youth tobacco use in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report: “Tobacco Product Use among Middle and High School Students — United States, 2022.” Findings show that in 2022, nearly 1 in 9 U.S. middle and high school students (3.08 million) had used a tobacco product during the past 30 days – including 16.5% of high school and 4.5% of middle school students. According to this survey, the most commonly used devices are e-cigarettes.

The speaker of this grand rounds, Alice Kuo, MD, PhD, MBA is a professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), and of Health Policy and Management in the Fielding University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Public Health. She is also Chief of Medicine-Pediatrics at UCLA. During her presentation, she will talk about the crisis and share with us her work in gathering a coalition of advocates who were able to mobilize and provide testimonies at city council meetings. This effort of hers eventually led to the ban of the sale of flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, in Los Angeles.
