Obesity Prevention Interventions in US Public Schools: Are Schools Using Programs That Promote Weight Stigma?

U.S. schools rarely undertake evidence-based obesity prevention programs. A national study of a random sample of U.S. public schools found that despite the substantial amount of scientific research devoted to developing and testing school-based obesity-prevention and nutrition- or physical-activity-promotion programs, fewer than 3 percent of schools reported implementing such programs. Fewer than half of schools reported implementing any kind of nutrition, physical activity, or obesity prevention strategy at all.
