Characteristics and Correlates of Cigarette Smoking Status Among U.S. Adults Receiving Federal Housing Assistance
Data from the National Health Interview Survey and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) show that 2 of 3 (67%) HUD-assisted residents are former smokers or never smokers. These people are susceptible to secondhand smoke exposure in their homes. Secondhand smoke exposure of HUD-assisted residents is a public health concern because there is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure. Furthermore, smoking in multiunit housing imposes considerable financial costs. The implementation of smoke-free U.S.-subsidized housing has been projected to yield annual cost savings of nearly $500 million from averted health care costs, reduced renovation costs in units where smoking has occurred, and reduced smoking-attributable fire losses.
