What:

"Emerging infections and the forensic pathologist" will be a featured topic at the annual meeting of the National Association of Medical Examiners. In addition, the conference will focus on emerging environmental conditions and the latest information on SIDS, asthma, and natural disaster mortality trends.

These special sessions are co-sponsored by the CDC and the National Association of Medical Examiners.

When:

Oct. 30 - Nov. 4, 1998. CDC's Dr. James Hughes will be speaking on the topic of emerging infections and the forensic pathologist during the all-day scientific program October 31. The emerging environmental conditions session will be held Nov. 2.

Background:

The National Association of Medical Examiners' 32nd Annual Meeting will present recent advances in the field of forensic pathology and forensic sciences such as emerging infections and autopsy biosafety. In addition, the conference will give an update on biological warfare agents currently recognized and will discuss environmental conditions affecting the public health, including occupational surveillance and investigation.

Dr. James Hughes is the director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases, CDC. Dr. Hughes is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and an Assistant Surgeon General in the United States Public Health Service.

Speakers also include experts from: U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Emory University School of Medicine, University of New Mexico, and CDC.
