Media AdvisoryMay 19, 1998 CDC LAUNCHES NATIONAL SKIN CANCER PREVENTION INITIATIVE MAY 20 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Donna Shalala, Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, will launch a national skin cancer prevention initiative, Wednesday, May 20, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. One million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year, and scientists agree that exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays is a key environmental factor in the development of skin cancer. Still many Americans do not adequately protect their skin. CDC's campaign, "Choose your Cover," is primarily aimed at 18-25 year olds and features a series of Public Service Announcements that illustrate how people can protect their skin from UV rays while still enjoying outdoor activities. The press conference will begin at 2:15 p.m. Starting at noon, exhibits and activities will be open to the public. Activities will include rock-climbing, golf putting and swing practice, basketball, a computerized morphing demonstration, and music.
