CDC appoints new director for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control

Suzanne Binder, M.D., has been appointed Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

Dr. Binder was the Associate Director for Medical Science, Division of Parasitic Diseases, National Center for Infectious Diseases, since September 1995. There, she provided epidemiologic and programmatic leadership for CDC's parasitic disease activities. She also led the revision of CDC's strategy to address emerging infectious disease threats.

Dr. Binder has worked at CDC since 1984, when she joined the agency as an epidemic intelligence officer with the Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Effects, National Center for Environmental Health. There, she directed CDC's childhood lead poisoning prevention program and worked on issues involving toxic waste and industrial and natural disasters. From 1990 to 1995, she was chief of the lead poisoning branch, where she directed CDC's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention program.

Dr. Binder received the B.S. degree from McGill University and the M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine and continues clinical work at the travel medicine clinic affiliated with the Emory University medical complex. Among the many awards she has received are several from the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Arthur S. Flemming Award for management excellence.
