Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., Director, CDC
WHAT
Dr. Frieden will participate in the May 11 launch of the first-ever United Nations-sanctioned Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020). To coincide with the launch, CDC is releasing 50 state-specific fact sheets that detail the costs of motor vehicle crash deaths. The figures are medical and work loss costs (2005) and were obtained by using CDC's WISQARS Cost of Injury Reports module. The fact sheets break down costs by type of road user and also by age group. Included in the fact sheet are some evidence-based strategies CDC recommends to save lives and reduce costs (e.g., primary seat belt laws, graduated driver licensing, etc.). These fact sheets will be available at 10:00 a.m. ET on May 11 at www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/statecosts.
