The CDC final investigation update of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to Honey Smacks has been posted at https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/mbandaka-06-18/index.html.
Updates:
- Although this outbreak investigation is over, recalled Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal has a long shelf life and might still be in people’s homes and could make people sick if eaten.
- There were 135 ill people reported in this outbreak from 36 states, including 34 who were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.
- Illnesses in this outbreak started on dates ranging from March 3, 2018 to August 29, 2018.
- People get sick from Salmonella 12 to 72 hours after swallowing the germ and experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
- Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.
Advice:
- Do not eat recalled Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal with a “best if used by” date of June 14, 2019 or earlier. Check your home for it and throw it away, or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Retailers should not sell or serve recalled Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal.
- If you stored cereal that looks like Kellogg’s Honey Smacks in a container without the packaging and don’t remember the brand or type, throw it away. Kellogg’s Honey Smacks is a sweetened puffed wheat cereal.
