Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea and insomnia, are more common than most people realize. See your doctor or a sleep disorders specialist before you deploy if you spend 7 to 9 hours in bed but experience any of the following:

  • You consistently take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep.
  • You consistently awaken several times or for long periods.
  • You take frequent naps.
  • You often feel sleepy, especially at inappropriate times.

If you have an untreated sleep disorder, you will be at higher risk for causing a fatigue-related injury or error when working long hours. See a sleep specialist for an evaluation. Look in the left panel, under the heading Sleep Clinics, to find one near you. Make the appointment well in advance of your deployment date so there is adequate time to develop a tailored treatment plan.
