Mining Feature: NIOSH Mining Wins Awards at 2018 SME Annual Conference and Expo

The NIOSH Mining Program is proud to announce that Jacob L. Carr, an engineer, team leader in the Electrical and Mechanical Safety Systems Branch, and PhD candidate at Penn State University, is the recipient of the J.W. Woomer Young Engineer Award, which was presented in a ceremony at this year's Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Annual Conference and Expo in Minneapolis. Carr's work on proximity detection for continuous mining machines and mobile equipment, as well as his contributions to a cross-divisional research effort on automation in mining have made a significant impact on mine safety for the industry.
In addition to Carr's award, eight other researchers from two separate branches of NIOSH Mining's Pittsburgh Mining Research Division were honored as a group at SME for their work related to respirable dust. Joe Archer, Andy Cecala, Jay Colinet, Emily Haas, Steve Mischler, Justin Patts, Randy Reed, and Don Tuchman received the Health & Safety Research and Educational Excellence Award for their collaborative work on several efforts, including developing the clothes-cleaning booth technology, the Helmet-CAM/EVADE assessment technology, and the continuous personal dust monitor. The group was nominated for their award by Mark Ellis, the president of the Industrial Minerals Association - North America (IMA-NA).
