Mining Feature: Software Developers Named Finalists for PPE App
Wednesday, September 9, 2020
The NIOSH PPE Tracker App puts the power to track and monitor PPE supplies in users' hands.
Mining Program software developers are among the finalists in the COVID-19 category of the 2020 ClearMark Awards, an annual awards program sponsored by the Center for Plain Language, a nonprofit that champions clear communication.
During the initial outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the United States, widespread global shortages in personal protective equipment (PPE) created supply chain disruptions. With information about COVID-19 continuing to evolve and recent spikes in cases, the need to track PPE remains as critical now as it did when cases started to emerge in the U.S.
The team of Gino Fazio, John Britton, Jonathan Fritz, Matthew Young, and Gregory Cole developed the NIOSH PPE Tracker App, allowing users—typically medical personnel or other workers who use PPE—to track and monitor different types of PPE, PPE inventories, PPE burn rates, and estimates on when to restock. The app also offers the ability to export inventory and burn rate data and share reports via email.
The app was launched on April 28, 2020, for Android devices, and on April 29, 2020, for devices running Apple's iOS. In only four months, the app was downloaded more than 6,400 times with users giving rave reviews.
Winners will be announced at the ClearMark Award Ceremony at the Access for All Conference in October 2020.
