Approved Respirator Standards

Closed-Circuit Escape Respirator (CCER)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tests and certifies closed-circuit escape respirators (CCERs). These units are used in mining, underground construction/tunneling or permit-required confined space entry, and in maritime operations, including the U.S. Navy. Approval is based on findings from the stringent testing performed on sample units submitted to NIOSH by manufacturers. In addition to testing the units, NIOSH evaluates the technical specifications and the manufacturer’s quality control program.
