New surveillance case definitions should be used in classifying 2022 cases for four national notifiable conditions (COVID-19, Chlamydia trachomatis, Lyme disease, and viral hemorrhagic fever) and two conditions under standardized surveillance (acute flaccid myelitis and alpha-gal syndrome). For more information, see the upcoming letter, “2022 Changes to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System,” which is expected to be emailed to State and Territorial Epidemiologists in mid to late December.
Babesiosis Message Mapping Guide
- Babesiosis is now open for general onboarding. Babesiosis MMG version 1.0.2 contains formatting updates and the most up-to-date value set for International Destination(s) of Recent Travel (82764-2). All value sets associated with this guide are in the PHIN Vocabulary Access and Distribution System (VADS) Babesiosis Case Notification View version 5.
Malaria Message Mapping Guide
- Malaria is now open for general onboarding. Malaria MMG version 1.0.2 contains formatting and test scenario updates and the most up-to-date value sets for International Destination(s) of Recent Travel (82764-2) and Subject’s Country of Residence Prior to Most Recent Travel (TRAVEL15). All value sets associated with this guide are in the PHIN VADS Malaria Case Notification View version 5.
Trichinellosis Message Mapping Guide
- Trichinellosis is now open for general onboarding. Trichinellosis MMG version 1.0.3 contains formatting and test scenario updates and the most up-to-date value set for International Destination(s) of Recent Travel (82764-2). All value sets associated with this guide are in the PHIN VADS Trichinellosis Case Notification View version 3.

Information about the 2020 NNDSS Data Reconciliation Deadline Extension
Thank you to the jurisdictions who have completed the 2020 annual data reconciliation process for NNDSS. We appreciate your intense and sustained efforts this year in performing surveillance, prevention, and control efforts.
For jurisdictions who have not yet completed the 2020 NNDSS data reconciliation process, we realize that you and your staff have been overwhelmed with pandemic response activities and that there have been challenges with the data reconciliation process implemented for 2020 data using the Message Validation, Processing, and Provisioning System. Due to these challenges, we are extending the deadline to complete the 2020 data reconciliation process to close of business (COB) Wednesday, December 15, 2021.
To provide flexibility, the following options are available for closing out the 2020 NNDSS data at CDC. The following options are available to jurisdictions that have not completed the 2020 NNDSS annual reconciliation:
- Our 2020 data reconciliation is finished, and we are signing the signature tables and emailing them back to you now.
- We would like to continue updating our 2020 data in order to finalize and sign off on the 2020 data by COB 12/15/2021.
- We will not be able to complete the reconciliation process for 2020 data. Please include the data you have as of 12/15/2021 from my jurisdiction and include a statement or notation in the published 2020 NNDSS annual tables indicating that, due to the pandemic, these data may be incomplete and may not match the data published by our jurisdiction (see the note in the 2019 annual tables).
- Do not publish my 2020 (non-STD) data in the 2020 NNDSS annual tables. Please include a statement or notation indicating that finalized 2020 data for our jurisdiction are not available for publication.
PLEASE NOTE: If we do not receive a response from you by COB 12/15/2021, we will implement option #3 for the 2020 NNDSS annual tables.
