Data Standardization Workgroup Update

CDC and the CSTE Data Standardization Workgroup (DSWG) are using a new approach to standardize additional core data elements for case-based surveillance.

Starting Oct. 13, CDC and CSTE began convening groups focused on specific data classes. Each topic will likely take 1–2 calls to complete. Participants will receive materials for review and polls before each call.

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

  • Meetings will be held on the 2nd Friday of each month, 1–2 PM ET
  • Meetings began October 13, 2023

Industry/Occupation

  • Meetings will be held on the 3rd Friday of each month, 1–2 PM ET
  • Meetings began October 20, 2023

These workgroups also help determine the format and data content submitted to CDC for most case-based surveillance.

All jurisdictions are encouraged to participate. To register, use this Data Element-Specific Team Interest Survey to receive webinar information on the workgroup meetings and the materials for review before each call.

Message Mapping Guides Roundup

Although CDC has paused most message mapping guide (MMG) development and onboarding efforts as part of modernizing case surveillance, we encourage jurisdictions to implement and onboard the generic version 2 (GenV2) and Tuberculosis/Latent Tuberculosis (TB/LTBI) MMGs.

Learn more about support for MMG onboarding during the pause and get answers to other frequently asked questions about case surveillance modernization.

Congratulations to the following jurisdiction for being in production as of October 3!

The Road Ahead: CDC’s Progress Toward Modernizing NBS in Fall 2023

CDC is modernizing the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) Base System (NBS). CDC is excited to share key updates on completed and upcoming milestones in the third quarter of 2023.

On October 3, 2023, CDC released version 7.0.0 of NBS. Access the release package on GitHub or NBS Central. This update includes:

  • Detailed system environment requirements, install scripts, training videos, release notes, and complete documentation and code to download and install in your local environment.
  • Updated automation to establish NBS infrastructure, networking, and configuration, and backend improvements to offer flexibility in a pandemic-ready system.

On October 4, 2023, CDC released the NBS Modernization Demo Site. The demo site allows any interested STLT or organization to explore NBS 7.0.0 and all future versions without needing to install the release package. Additionally, it allows CDC to engage partners and users to gather feedback and continuously improve the product. Contact NBS@cdc.gov to access the demo site.

In future NBS application releases, CDC plans to introduce new user interface and user experience features, including Patient Profile, Patient Data Entry, Patient Delete, Patient Search, Page Builder, and Address Autofill.

Email NBS@cdc.gov if you have questions or feedback about NBS modernization.
