New Distribution Schedule for Case Surveillance News
In 2024, Case Surveillance News (CSN) will move from a monthly to a quarterly distribution schedule. This change will enhance our ability to identify and produce consistent, high-quality content.
The next CSN will be distributed in March 2024. Subsequent issues will be released at the end of each quarter in (e.g., June 2024, Sept. 2024, Dec. 2024).
CDC will continue to share monthly updates with jurisdictions on the eSHARE training webinars. We will also continue to send out time-sensitive updates to jurisdictions using the NNDSS email distribution list.
New CSTE Data Standardization Brief Now Available
The first product from the CSTE Data Standardization Workgroup (DSWG), “Dates of Importance to Public Health Surveillance: Illness (Symptom) Onset Date, Report Dates, Laboratory-Related Dates, (Clinical) Diagnosis Date,” is now available as a CSTE Brief. CSTE Briefs are consensus documents that CSTE uses to provide opinions on issues, topics, policies, or best practices that would not directly result in changes to state or local law, rule, or regulation.
The brief aims to simplify data integration and interpretation by standardizing how dates are used in case surveillance. Additionally, it defines concepts so that they can be used consistently across diseases, programs, and jurisdictions.
DSWG is hosting additional calls to standardize core data elements for case-based surveillance. These sessions will determine the format and content of data submitted to CDC for most case-based surveillance. Each topic will take 1–3 calls to complete. Participants will receive materials for review and polls before each call.
CDC encourages all jurisdictions to participate in DSWG sessions. To register, use this Data Element-Specific Team Interest Survey to indicate the topics you are interested in. You will receive webinar information on the workgroup meetings and the materials for review before the calls.

COVID-19 MMG
The PHIN Vocabulary Access and Distribution System (VADS) COVID-19 Case Notification View Version 16 is now available for the COVID-19 MMG version 1.2. The changes include:
- Six values added to Vaccine Type (NND) (now v.13)
Congratulations to the following jurisdictions for being in production as of December 1!
- Maryland for TB/LTBI MMG
- South Dakota for COVID-19 MMG and TB MMG only
Improvements to CDC Web Content are Underway
CDC strives to be a response-ready agency with easy-to-access information. As part of CDC Moving Forward—an agencywide effort to transform operations—CDC is modernizing the structure and functionality of its website. CDC launched Clean Slate to overhaul the CDC.gov website and streamline content by more than 60% so that people will be better able to find the information they’re looking for. The relaunch of CDC.gov is expected to occur in spring 2024.
During this time, you may start noticing changes as NNDSS and agency staff assess the utility of web content. Some content might go away; some might move around. All content will be updated to streamline access and eliminate redundancy.
YOU are our primary technical audience. Your access to technical resources will always be our top priority. Throughout our content improvements, you might see a shift in the location of information on the NNDSS website. We’ll do our best to inform you of changes as they happen.
REMINDER: New Event Codes for Carbapenemase-producing Organisms (CPOs)
In 2024, jurisdictions will be required to use new event codes, 50270 and 50271, for Carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPOs). The previous code, 50244, will be retired.
Starting with reported MMWR Year 2024:
- Confirmed cases of CPO, clinical (event=50270) and CPO, screening (event=50271), and CPO, total (event=50270 and 50271) counts will display in the NNDSS weekly tables under Cumulative YTD 2024.
- CP-CRE (event=50244) will be retired, and cases with this code will error for cases reported with MMWR Year 2024 and beyond; therefore, CP-CRE cases will no longer be included in the CPO total counts.
CDC encourages jurisdictions to begin using 50270 and 50271 in surveillance information systems. Then you’ll be ready to send these conditions through NNDSS in 2024. If you have questions about these event codes, please contact us through edx@cdc.gov using the subject line: 50270/50271.
Jim Duff Joins CDC’s Public Health Data Transmission Branch
CDC is pleased to announce that Jim Duff has accepted a position as the acting co-lead and deputy of the CDC’s Public Health Data Transmission Branch in the Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance, and Technologies’ Detect & Monitor Division. Jim will permanently transition into this role on December 17. In his new role, Jim will work alongside division and branch leadership to further the agency’s public health data transmission efforts. Jim will report to Detect & Monitor Division Tech Co-Lead, Tim Best.
Previously, Jim supported CDC’s ReportStream project as a digital services engineer for the United States Digital Service. Before joining USDS, Jim led teams at several startups developing genomic analysis pipelines, with a focus on in-vitro diagnostic medical device software to deliver cancer clinical claims. From 2008 to 2016, he directed development of software for NPR’s Public Radio Satellite System. Prior to that, Jim developed analysis software for NASA earth scientists and taught high school math in Belize.
