Quality Improvement (QI) and Care Coordination: Implementation from the Field

a group of healthcare professional and business people meet around a conference table

As part of its efforts to respond to the opioid overdose crisis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the 2016 Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain (Guideline) to assist clinicians in offering safer, more effective pain treatment for patients. To encourage uptake and use of the evidence-based Guideline, CDC worked with external partners to establish a quality improvement (QI) collaborative of a diverse set of healthcare systems, support them in implementing recommendations from the 2016 Guideline, and produce associated QI measures to monitor changes in system-level opioid prescribing practices over time. The first Collaborative began in 2018 with a cohort of four systems, with a second cohort of five health systems joining in April 2019.
