Impacts of the Saving Mothers, Giving Life Initiative

Evaluation results showed that the SMGL Initiative led to substantial and significant declines in maternal and neonatal death rates over the 5 years of the initiative. By improving maternal health services and coordinating the systems that support them (such as increasing the number of facilities that provide emergency care and transportation systems), more mothers and their infants were able to reach skilled care in time to prevent avoidable deaths.
