As a key implementing agency of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), CDC is at the forefront of the global response to the world’s two deadliest infectious diseases – HIV and TB. In 2020, CDC’s efforts contributed to more than 50 percent of key PEPFAR outcomes. CDC teams across the globe are working to ensure continued access to treatment while reducing the opportunity for exposure to COVID-19.

Stories Behind the Data

Over a 10-day period, renowned photographer Thom Pierce traveled with colleagues from CDC to South Africa, to the epicenter of the global HIV and TB epidemics in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. There, they captured images and stories of those at the forefront of CDC’s global response as part of PEPFAR—individuals whose efforts and innovations are helping to transform these epidemics.
