NCBDDD’s Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Surveillance Activities
NCBDDD is working with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) to apply a consistent surveillance case definition to monitor the number of infants diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) at birth.
What is NCBDDD Doing to Monitor NAS?
NCBDDD is working with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) to apply a consistent surveillance case definition to monitor the number of infants diagnosed with NAS at birth. Using consistent criteria to define NAS can help ensure scientists collect quality data. Timely and accurate data can drive public health action to support the health of pregnant women and their children.
Six sites have been selected for NAS surveillance:
- Arizona Department of Health Services
- Florida Department of Health
- Georgia Department of Public Health
- Massachusetts Department of Public Health
- Philadelphia Department of Public Health
- Tennessee Department of Health
Additionally, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Wisconsin Department of Health have received applied epidemiology fellows to provide support on NAS and birth defects surveillance.
