Signs & Symptoms
Final Update
This outbreak investigation is over. However, Vibrio is an important cause of illness in the United States. For information on steps people can take to reduce their risk of Vibrio infection from crab meat, read the Advice to Consumers, Restaurants, and Retailers.
What are the signs and symptoms of Vibrio infection (vibriosis)?
When people get a Vibrio infection from contaminated food, they may get watery diarrhea and the following signs and symptoms within 24 hours:
- stomach cramping
- nausea
- vomiting
- fever
- chills
How long do symptoms last?
Symptoms usually last about 3 days, and most people recover without treatment. People with vibriosis should drink plenty of liquids to replace fluids lost through diarrhea.
Who is more likely to have a severe illness?
Anyone can get sick from Vibrio bacteria, but you may be more likely to get an infection or severe complications if you
- have liver disease, cancer, diabetes, HIV, or thalassemia
- receive immune-suppressing therapy or have a weakened immune system
- take medicine to decrease stomach acid
- have had recent stomach surgery
More information about Vibrio bacteria and steps you can take to reduce your risk of infection can be found in a Q&A on CDC’s Vibrio Species Causing Vibriosis website.
